From Mary Szelagowski

Most members of the CHC have hiked some of the Buckeye Trail (BT). But how many know the BT Association is trying to get it designated a National Scenic Trail?

The National Park Service (NPS) is holding public meetings for stakeholders, who can support the effort. The meeting nearest us is at Hines Hill Conference Center in the CVNP (1403 W. Hines Hill, Peninsula) January 13 from 4 to 7pm. A link for public comment will also be on the NPS Buckeye National Scenic Trail Feasibility Study website beginning January 6. Consider sharing your feedback at the meeting or online.

Benefits of this designation:

* Access to the infrastructure and support of the NPS, such as signs, mapping, etc.

* Increased recognition and visibility for the BT, including through government channels

* Better fundraising opportunities and more involvement from communities and outdoor fans

* A federally-funded and staffed office with a budget for local initiatives and support for the BT.
