As winter is upon us, this is a reminder that we are entering the peak season for flu, covid and other respiratory infections. It is important that you take care of yourself when you are ill and also be considerate of other hikers. We have many members who are vulnerable to the more serious effects of these winter illnesses. CHC Responsible Hiking Guidelines speaks to this in item #6. “Stay home when ill. If you have symptoms of contagious illnesses, like the covid-19, seasonal flu, or the common cold, please stay home.” The CDC Guidelines for COVID19 strongly encourage that if you test positive you should stay home and isolate for 5 days to prevent spreading the disease. Generally, the first 5 days are when you are considered the most infectious. And furthermore, Standing Rule 2.3.2 f) 4) states “Denial of Mileage: The leader may deny a member full mileage credit due for an incomplete hike or for unacceptable behavior. After the hike is completed, the hike leader shall notify the member of the denial of miles and the reason for denial.”  Exposing others to contagious illnesses certainly falls in the category of unacceptable behavior.

Thanks for your cooperation.
