Update for Lock 29 Overflow Parking Lot-Cuyahoga Valley National Park
From the CVNP Website:
The Lock 29 parking lot and Overflow lot on Mill Street in Peninsula will be intermittently blocked by the train to allow for boarding. Access to the parking lots will be blocked from:
10:50 am to 11:10 am
1:20 pm to 1:40 pm
3:50 pm to 4:10 pm
These times are subject to change. This temporary delay will allow the park to assist Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to offer excursions between Akron and Peninsula.
Due to erosion issues along the tracks in some sections north of Peninsula, the train had been running on a modified schedule, and in early March made the decision to stop all operations. The park and CVSR are working together to offer train service beginning May 5, while avoiding areas affected by erosion. The park is working on long-term solutions to address erosion along the tracks and the towpath trail. On March 24, CVSR began moving operations to Peninsula after an independent engineering firm deemed it safe to move equipment only (no passengers) across the track sections most affected by erosion. Learn more about the train on this link. For more places to park along the Towpath Trail to walk or bike into Peninsula check out this page.

If you are planning on enjoying one of the morning hikes on 5/20 from Camp Onwego before the Potluck Lunch and General Meeting, please consider arriving early to help move the picnic tables back into place. During construction prep work mid-week for the new pavilion, a very large tree needed to be removed that wasn't anticipated. The removal necessitated moving lots of construction materials and the tables so they would not be damaged. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated to get tables ready for the potluck lunch. Please contact me directly if you can lead for me. I would appreciate your time and assistance.
I’ve already have confirmed substitute leaders to help me for some of my March and April hikes. Thank you Jeff Gattiker (April 14 & 28) and Susan Stebner (March 3 & April 12)!
I won’t be putting hikes on the May and June schedule so if others can schedule to lead hikes from the Winking Lizard PL in Brunswick that would be great. Onwego, Barb Buser 724-612-5767 [posted 2/26-3/29/23]

We are leading our first BREW HIKE for this year, on Saturday, February 25th at 11:00 a.m. from West Bay Plaza in Westlake. It's an easy 6-mile hike and, near the end of the hike, we'll be stopping for optional socializing at Pulpo Beer Company in Crocker Park. While doing research for this hike, we learned that Pulpo is the Spanish word for octopus, which is why a pink octopus is their logo.
If you prefer to just socialize and not hike, we'll see you at Pulpo (around 1:00 p.m). They serve really good food and will be selling us pints that day for only $5. Hope you can come and enjoy. Linda and John, hike leaders [posted 2/24-26/23]

CMP Levy

On the November ballot is a levy for the Cleveland Metroparks (CMP), Issue 5. This levy replaces the current 2 mil levy and represents over 60% of the parks funding. It maintains and improves our parks, trails, programs and zoo. Without it there would be massive cuts to the park’s budget. This issue is important to the CHC as over half of our hikes are conducted in the CMP.

December Holiday Party

Get your party shoes ready! The 2022 CHC Holiday Party will be held on Saturday December 3, 2022, at Tremont City Side Ballroom which is in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church complex at 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland (Tremont), Ohio. This is the same location as our 2021 holiday party and offers a central location, nicely decorated ballroom, view of downtown Cleveland, and plenty of space for free parking. As usual, the event will include food, music, photo contest winners and displays, the ever popular “White Elephant Exchange”, and lots more. All at the price of $42 per person (the same as last year). Please plan to attend and socialize with your hiking friends. They really know how to PARTY!! Send reservations to Patty Anderson by Wednesday, November 23, 2022. See page 2 of this attachment for the flyer with more details and the reservation form.

This year we are offering two options for helping the needy in our area: 1) bring canned goods or a gift card to Giant Eagle, Walmart, or similar stores (we have found that some food pantries only give out gift cards and no longer take canned goods) and/or 2) bring a pair or two of white tube socks. Also remember to bring a “white elephant” gift exchange item. The party is a BYOB affair so bring along your favorite libation and we will provide the mix and glasses. The fun begins at 4 p.m. As usual, the event will include food, music, photo contest winners and displays, and much more. The menu will include a vegetarian option (Pasta Primavera).

If you have any hiking related photos from 2022 you would like to see in the holiday party video, please email them to Dave Richards at drichards9891@gmail.com. If you already have the pictures on the CHC Facebook page or website there is no need to send them again.

If you have any questions, please contact Dave Richards at 407-491-4357. Hope to see you at the party! [poasted 10/12-10/30/22]

The South Woodland (Route 87) entrance is closed off until further notice due to a large sink hole.

Saturday, 9/3 Hike (#14) Lorain Waterfront Brew Hike - Correction"
The hike begins and ends at Lakeside Landing. One mile before the end, we will be making an optional stop at Bascule Brewery for socializing. The hike schedule wrongly states “socialize after hike.” It should have said during the hike. There will be a complimentary, build-your-own taco bar; they offer six beers on tap, as well as soft drinks available for purchase.
If you don’t stay to socialize, it’s a “straight shot” to get back to Lakeside Landing.
Looking forward to a “hoppy” good time together,

It's the winter that just keeps on giving. The current forecast for this Saturday morning is 36 degrees with a delightful rain/snow mix and 20 mph winds. In light of that I'm postponing the Onwego Spring Cleanup to Saturday April 2 at 9am. The current forecast for the 2nd is a few degrees warmer, half the wind and no precipitation. Cross your fingers that the forecast holds but we'll proceed on the 2nd regardless.

ATTENTION MEMBERS: LEARN ABOUT NEW SCHEDULE A HIKE AND REPORT A HIKE APPLICATIONS - DEMONSTRATIONS via ZOOM CONFERENCE

As discussed in the January 2022 Newsteps, we are almost ready to begin using our new applications for scheduling hikes and for completing hike reports: Schedule a Hike and Report a Hike. Plans for using these new apps have been in the works for quite some time.

We expect to start to use the Schedule a Hike application on February 15, 2022, when the Pathfinder Committee starts to schedule hikes for May and June. We also plan to use Report a Hike to submit hike leader reports starting on March 1, 2022. To make this transition as smooth as possible, we have scheduled a series of Zoom calls where we will demonstrate how to schedule and report hikes using these applications and will address questions or concerns you may have.
We hope that hike leaders and interested members participate in one of these sessions. At each session, CHC President Sharon Uhl will have some introductory comments, after which Ellen Papadimoulis and Peggy Koesel will demonstrate both applications and answer questions.

Don’t be shy, sign up for a demonstration on Zoom. Select one of the following days and times, then send an email with your name and email address to Ellen (see the CHC Directory) to let her know you plan to attend one of these meetings:
Tuesday, February 8 at 7:00 PM
Friday, February 11 at 2:00 PM
Sunday, February 13 at 6:00PM
Tuesday, February 15 at 7:00 PM
Wednesday, February 16 at 2:00 PM
Wednesday, February 16 at 7:00 PM
Once you sign up with Ellen, we will send you a link to the Zoom meeting for that day and time. We look forward to seeing you and checking out our new apps together.

For questions about these demonstrations, please send an email to: CHCtechnologycommittee@gmail.com or call Peggy or Ellen directly (see the CHC Directory for their phone numbers).

Change in plans for the New Years Eve Hike and Party!

Due to concerns about the very recent uptick in COVID19 hospitalizations – especially among those aged 50+ - we are reluctantly changing the plans for the New Years Eve Hike and Party.

The hike still starts at Thornton Park at 8:00 PM, and is planned for about 5 miles.
We will take advantage of the forecasted good weather – temperature in the 40s, very low chance of rain – and have the party in the parking lot at Thornton Park.

Soup and other refreshments and utensils will be provided.
If you choose to bring any food or desserts, please make sure they are vegetarian.
The route is still being planned, but will include at least one bathroom opportunity, since there will not be any at the end.
Hikers are invited to bring folding chairs and perhaps portable tables as well.
If you would like to party with us but not hike, please try to arrive shortly before 10:00 PM.
We will enjoy each other’s company for about an hour, giving most people time to be home at midnight.
For those who have never been to Thornton Park – it is at 3301 Warrensville Center Road in Shaker Heights. It is on the East side of Warrensville, two blocks north of Chagrin Blvd (and one block north of Farnsleigh Rd).

Most East Siders know where it is.
From the West Side, it can be reached most easily by taking I-480 to Warrensville and heading north about 3 miles. The driveway will be on the right.
Contact Bob with any questions.

SOUP SUPPER UPDATE

The Soup Supper is scheduled for November 14th from 4 to 6 pm at Camp Onwego. Reservations are limited to a maximum of 50 people. This is strictly an indoor, sit-down event. As you know, the cabin is relatively small for a group of 50. Seating is tight with our soup buffet set-up, and there is no outside ventilation except to open windows. If it's a cold day, we will be using the fireplace and wood-burning stove to keep us warm, and it will be extremely difficult to have fresh air circulating in the cabin. Therefore, members who wish to attend should be fully vaccinated. We ask you to respect our request to keep our members healthy and safe even though we will not ask you to bring proof of vaccination. We believe we can rely on our members to honor this precautionary expectation. If you have already registered and will not be vaccinated by November 14, please contact Rita Bennett to cancel your reservation. (CHCreservations19@gmail.com is preferred or leave Rita a message at 330-468-6229). We expect to schedule the Soup Supper again in the Spring of 2022, and we hope at that time we won’t have to restrict the number of attendees or request that attendees be vaccinated for our mutual health and safety.

Avoiding Phishing Scams

Have you ever received an email purporting to come from a member of the club asking you to purchase gift cards for donation to some charity, or for any other purpose? Have you ever received a message with a club member’s name as the sender, but with a weird email address or an odd message?

As most of you know, emails of this type are a scam known as phishing. But just in case you aren’t aware of phishing, these scams attempt to get your personal information or money. Please note: the club does not make requests like this of its members (or of anyone else), and it would not authorize a member to make requests like these to our members.

How would you know it’s a scam? Some things to look for are described on the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Information page which discusses how to recognize and avoid phishing scams. Here is the link to the FTC’s Consumer Information page: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and- avoid-phishing-scams. If you are in doubt, check it out. Thank you.

Park Relations Chair Dave reminds us that the National Park Service is seeking input from the public to collaborate on the development of a Visitor Use Management plan for Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  Your input will help CVNP understand the needs, experiences, and desires of its partners, stakeholders, communities, and visitors. Please share your ideas. The initial comment period is open until April 9, 2021. It would be helpful if you respond to as many of the following questions as you can.

Topic Questions:

  1. What experiences in Cuyahoga Valley National Park are most important to you? What kind of experiences do you want future visitors to have when they come to the park?
  2. What barriers get in the way of enjoying or visiting Cuyahoga Valley National Park? What barriers prevent you from achieving your desired experiences?
  3. What strategies do you recommend the planning team consider to address barriers and/or key issues and opportunities?
  4. What activities, facilities, and services would make you feel more welcome, safe, or satisfied with your experience?
  5. Other thoughts you'd like to share with the project team?

If you would like to provide input directly, please visit the CVNP website at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/document.cfm?parkID=121&projectID=92300&documentID=110589

If you prefer to provide your input indirectly, please contact any CHC officer or director (by email or on a hike) and let them know your thoughts. Dave will be meeting with our board at the April 6, 2021 board meeting to collect input from you and the board.  Thank you.   [posted 3/25-4/9/21]

CHC Does Not Cancel Hikes in Advance

CHC policy is to NOT cancel hikes in advance. Hikes can be cancelled in progress for dangerous weather (lightning, tornado warnings, etc.)

It is up to the individual hiker to determine if rain, ice, or snow should determine their participation in a hike.

Hike Leader Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the hike leader to find a substitute leader in case he or she is unable to lead their hike.  If a leader cannot be found in advance of the starting time, a substitute leader can be selected by the group in attendance.

Location Changes

If the starting location of a hike needs to be changed, an eblast can be sent out to members. However, the leader should assign someone to be at the listed location to direct anyone who did not receive the information to the new location

The January 1 Hikes are Cancelled

If you downloaded either the one or three-column December schedule prior to 12/25, note that although two hikes were listed for 1/1, these hikes have been cancelled due to the large number of people who usually participate.

The January 1, 2021 President’s and Vice President’s Hikes are Cancelled

In the last few weeks, CDC and other authorities have indicated that next eight weeks will be the darkest days of the Covid-19 pandemic. The CDC's new guidance notes "[c]rowded events in outdoor settings have also been linked to spread of SARS-CoV-2, although it can be difficult to isolate the impact of crowded outdoor events from related indoor social interactions."

Although we had been cautiously optimistic, current conditions made us reconsider the wisdom of proceeding with the President’s and VP’s hikes. Among other things, our two hikes on New Year's Day would appear to be the type of "crowded event[s]" the CDC recommends we avoid because they create opportunities for congregating in groups before and/or after the hikes.

Earlier this week, the pathfinder committee recommended canceling these hikes.  After considerable discussion, the board decided it would be inadvisable to go forward with our plans for these annual hikes.

Why not wait to reassess until later in the month? Our rules do not permit cancellation of a hike on the schedule before the start time. That means the appropriate time to reassess our options for these two hikes was before publication of the January 2021 schedule on the website and before sending it out for printing and mailing.

We are disappointed that these hikes will not go forward because they are the traditional start for the CHC hiking year. The January 1, 2021 schedule of activities will indicate that they have been “cancelled due to Covid-19.”  Let’s hope that we will be able to reschedule these hikes for another time.

In the meantime, we can continue to hike responsibly on other hikes scheduled in December 2020 and January 2021 by following the Responsible Hiking Guidelines.

Responsible Hiking Guidelines

In response to the coronavirus (Covid-19), the Governor of the State of Ohio declared a state of emergency.  The State of Ohio, local governments and park districts have imposed certain restrictions on activities in their respective jurisdictions, including gathering size and social proximity.

Until all restrictions on gathering size and proximity are lifted, hike leaders and hikers are responsible to hike in compliance with the Responsible Hiking Guidelines.

New Curfews, Stay-at-home and Travel Advisories

From Peggy Koesel. CHC President

We have received email from a number of well-respected CHC members suggesting that we consider suspending hiking, particularly because there are curfews, stay-at-home and travel advisories in Summit, Medina and Cuyahoga Counties.

It does not appear that these advisories presently prohibit outdoor activities. Still, the Governor or local authorities may place further limits on activities. If there are expanded curfews, additional or further limits on gathering size and/or limits are placed on outdoor activities, we may have to suspend CHC hiking.

In the meantime, we expect every member to follow the Responsible Hiking Guidelines every day, on every hike. We do so out of respect for each other, for health care and other essential workers, and for our friends and neighbors in the communities where we hike. Please take care. [posted 11/20/2020-12/9/20]
